SC-133 Skull and Crossbones PMG VF35 £13 1776 South Carolina Currency Note
Rare & Very Choice. October 19, 1776 “EIGHT DOLLARS” (or THIRTEEN POUNDS) South Carolina Colonial Currency Note. Graded & certified by PMG as VF35. With the look of an even higher grade. PMG notes that there is some restorations done to this note, but they must be extremely well done and/or of very minor significance because I can not detect any such repairs. In any case, this note is. Darkly & clearly inked on both sides with no problems of any kind that I can detect, and there are no pin holes. There are no known uncirculated examples of a SC-133 graded by PMG or PCGS. The highest being a single note graded by PMG as AU55. PCGS’s highest graded is just an XF45 Apparent with some minor problems. On the back side is an interesting and rather intricate design with the. Value printed in Roman numerals VIII (but printed upside down), four hour glasses marking the passing of time, the superstitious denomination of “Thirteen Pounds” printed to the right side, along with an unusual “skull and crossbones” vignette (its true meaning now probably lost to history). On the front side is a bold rendition of. Latin inscription “IMPAVIDE” (Fearlessly). This vignette on this particular example is perfectly printed and is boldly displayed. The human faces from the four corners of the world are all “blowing wind” upon the unprotected rock. Very Low & bold 2-digit serial number 59 in dark red ink. Along with the handwritten signatures of John Berwick, Philip Neyler, and vertically, Edward Blake in very light red ink. An authentic & historical item that was printed in our nation’s birthyear of 1776 and issued during the Revolutionary War (1775-83), just a couple months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in July of 1776.
